In 960 AD (Song dynasty) Lin Mo Niang aka Mazu was born on Meizhou island in Putian. She was later worshipped as a sea goddess by the Southern Min people.In 1684, the Qing Emperor Kangxi gave the sea goddess the highest honour, the name Tien Hou.
