Southern Min culture

In 960 AD (Song dynasty) Lin Mo Niang aka Mazu was born on Meizhou island in Putian. She was later worshipped as a sea goddess by the Southern Min people.

In 1684, the Qing Emperor Kangxi gave the sea goddess the highest honour, the name Tien Hou.

Southern Min subgroups

There are six subgroups:

Taiwanese Min - celebrating Mazu festival


Hainanese Min

Leizhou Min

Hing Hua people - commemorating the Song heroes of Putian who defended Fujian province


Teochew people - Teochew opera

Zhenan Min - Celebration in Qinggang town of Zhejiang
