Main ethnicities in China

Introduction

The grouping below differs slightly from China's census 2010 in that it groups closely related ethnicities with similar dialects into one group.

There are five main ethnic groups in China in descending order.

Han Chinese

The Han Chinese (漢族) is the largest ethnic group in China at 91.65%.

They live mostly in the provinces along Yellow River, Yangtze River, Pearl River and also northeast China.

Zhuang

The Zhuang (壯族) and its closest relatives Buyei (布依族 is the second largest ethnic group in China at 1.48%. They are part of Tai-Kadai people. 

They live mostly along the Pearl River in southern China especially Guangxi and Guizhou.

Hui

The Hui (回族is the third largest ethnic group in China at 0.794%. 

Hui are Muslim descendants of Arab or Persian traders on the ancient Silk Road who intermarried with Han Chinese or Muslim-converted Han Chinese.

They live mostly in northwest China especially Ningxia and Gansu.

Manchu

The Manchu (滿族) and its closest relatives Xibe (錫伯) is the fourth largest ethnic group in China at 0.793%. They are part of Tungusic people. 

They live mostly in northeast China i.e. Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang.

Miao (Hmong)

Miao (苗族) aka Hmong and its closest relative the She tribe (畲族is the fifth largest group in China at 0.76%. They are part of Hmong-Mien people.

If we also include their more distant relative the Yao (瑶族aka Mien at 0.21%, Hmong-Mien would be the third largest group in China at 0.97%. 

They live mostly in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River i.e. Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang and also Fujian.
