Main ethnicities in Singapore and Malaysia

Introduction

Singapore and Malaysia used to be of the same country so any political differences are ignored because the people living in both countries have the same cultural, linguistics and religious elements. The statistics here are of year 2015.

There are three main ethnic groups in both countries which are Malay, Han Chinese and Tamils.

Malay

Malays form the largest ethnic group (55%) in Malaysia and second largest ethnic group (15%) in Singapore.

They are part of Austronesian people and exclusively Muslims. They live mostly in the small towns and rural areas of Peninsular Malaysia.

Southern Han Chinese

The Han Chinese form the largest ethnic group (76.2%) in Singapore and second largest ethnic group (23.7%) in Malaysia. However, the absolute number of Han Chinese in Malaysia is more than twice that of Singapore's.

During the British Straits Settlements (1826-1946 AD), they were collectively called Straits Chinese.

Their ancestors came mostly from Fujian and Guangdong and speak Southern Chinese languages. They live mostly in the bigger cities along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia from Penang to Singapore.

Southern Indians

Southern Indians such as Tamil, Malayalee, Telugu form the third largest ethnic group in both Singapore and Malaysia (about 6% each).

They celebrate Hindu festivals and speak Southern Indian languages.
